I have never owned a tablet, and I long questioned their place in my technology family tree. With a smartphone, a laptop, a desktop, and big-screen TV that can stream YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Prime, I questioned whether the gap between iPhone and laptop really needed to be filled. That was until a tabletop miniature game I play (Warmachine & Hordes) announced an app that would make the game mechanics more efficient, so that piqued my interest a bit. I started researching the Kindle and, unexpectedly, I found myself really wanting the 7-inch tablet.
I am the luckiest guy around -- my wife got this for me for my birthday. And I am so glad she did, as this is an absolutely awesome entertainment device. After using it for a long weekend, I've come to one conclusion: the Kindle HD isn't perfect for everyone, but it's absolutely perfect for me.
SCREEN: The HD display is incredible. The screen is sharp, bright, saturated and beautiful. Glare is definitely at a minimum, and I've been able to enjoy it in reasonably bright rooms. The touch-screen is fairly responsive, and it's made gaming (Temple Run, Angry Birds, etc) even more fun than on a smartphone.
INTERFACE: At first glance, the OS will seem minimalist at best and completely lacking at worst. There's no desktop to speak of. No folders, no menus, no icons (aside from the "carousel," which is basically a list of recently opened media). There's a toolbar at the top that will point you toward your books, music, movies, etc. But that's it. This was a little jarring to me at first. I'm used to a traditional operating system. But I soon realized that this interface makes sense. The Kindle is all about delivering and consuming media content. And, as such, the Kindle's OS is designed to do one thing and one thing only -- direct the user to the Amazon marketplace. And I'm OK with that.
I know some people have complained that the Kindle is constantly trying to sell you something. But I don't get the problem. This was never designed to be an all-comers workhorse device. You're not going to use the Fire HD to tap out a report or prepare a PowerPoint. You're not going to do intensive video editing or debug a website. That's why, after all, we have our laptops and desktops, right? The Kindle HD is designed for entertainment. And Amazon has the best selection of movies, TV, books, magazines, music, games, etc. If I was using an iPad, I'd probably always point it toward the Amazon store, anyway, so this just cuts out the middleman. I haven't found myself lamenting the lack of X or Y or Z. I love what the Kindle comes with, and, more importantly, I love with what the Kindle DOESN'T come with. Again, this is an entertainment device. I have no plans to sync my work contacts with my Kindle. I will never set up my work e-mail on my Kindle. I will never create a presentation on my Kindle. This tablet is for fun, and that's it.
SPEAKERS: I did not expect this. The speakers are way better than they have any right to be on a $200 tablet. They drive well through my nice headphones, too. The screen is awesome, so watching content is great. But these speakers make listening to content great, too. It's too big to replace an iPod, but it's really not meant to.
STORAGE: I got the 16GB version, and that will be plenty for me. I don't plan to store HD movies on my device, as the Amazon Cloud, iTunes Cloud, Netflix Cloud, Whatever Cloud is all I need. If you do a lot of traveling (and perhaps would like to store a movie on the device for plane rides and stuff like that), a bigger hard drive might make sense. But, in 2012, we're all very rarely outside of WiFi access. Whether it's at home or Starbucks or work or wherever, you're going to be able to stream things most of the time. And, if not, you can still fit a few HD movies on here, or tons and tons and tons of books that will certainly tide you over until you're back to a WiFi area.
